10 min readBy Unfollowly Team

Did you know that Instagram stores a comprehensive record of everything you've ever done on the platform? From your very first post to every like you've given, every message you've sent, and every account you've followed - it's all there in your data archive.

Under privacy regulations like GDPR in Europe and CCPA in California, social media platforms are legally required to provide you with a copy of all personal data they hold about you. This gives you the right to see exactly what information Instagram has collected, back up your content, and use tools like Unfollowly to gain deeper insights.

Whether you're curious about your digital footprint, want to analyze your engagement, or simply want a backup of your content, downloading your Instagram data is a valuable exercise every user should do at least once.

Download on iPhone or Android

The mobile app provides the easiest way to request your data. Follow these steps on your iPhone or Android device:

1

Open Instagram and Go to Settings

Tap your profile picture, then tap the menu icon (three horizontal lines) in the top right corner. Select "Settings and privacy" from the menu.

2

Navigate to Accounts Center

Scroll down and tap "Accounts Center" at the top. This is Meta's unified settings hub for Instagram and Facebook.

3

Find Your Information Settings

Tap "Your information and permissions," then select "Download your information."

4

Choose What to Download

Select your Instagram account. You can choose to download all information or select specific categories. For best results with analytics tools, choose "All available information."

5

Select Format and Quality

Choose JSON format for data analysis (required for Unfollowly), or HTML if you just want to browse. Select "High" media quality if you want full-resolution photos and videos.

6

Submit Request

Tap "Submit request." Instagram will process your request and send you an email when your data is ready to download.

Download on Desktop (Web)

You can also request your data through the Instagram website on your computer:

1

Go to instagram.com and log in to your account

2

Click your profile picture in the top right, then click Settings

3

Select Accounts Center from the left sidebar

4

Click Your information and permissions

5

Click Download your information

6

Select your Instagram account and choose JSON format

7

Click Create files to submit your request

How Long Does It Take?

After submitting your request, Instagram needs time to compile your data. Processing times vary based on several factors:

5-30 min
Small accounts
Less than 1,000 posts
1-4 hours
Medium accounts
1,000-10,000 posts
Up to 48h
Large accounts
10,000+ posts

Instagram will send you an email and an in-app notification when your data is ready. The download link expires after 4 days, so make sure to download it promptly once you receive the notification.

If you haven't received your data after 48 hours, check your spam folder. If it's still missing, try submitting the request again.
